It is difficult to imagine a country with more promise, one less burdened by history and inherited prejudices,
than the Australia we call home. Favoured by any reckoning, ours is as democratic and peaceful a nation as has been
built by people thus far. There is much to celebrate; a living indigenous culture, stupendous natural beauty, a
successful economy and the spirit of helping out we see in times of trouble. Often at this time of the year as
neighbours rally to the side of friends and neighbours facing the calamity of bushfire. We are a literate, creative nation,
remarkably free of enemies. Importantly, to my mind. Australia is not bound up by ancient tribal or religious
enmities that have scarred the Old World, nor do we necessarily have to be beholden in the future to any one power
or ideology.
